Peat free and sustainable plants

Using peat-free alternatives has also helped with weed control, with the added bonus of using fewer chemicals, in particular with liverwort control.

We consider our nursery to be a leading grower of sustainable plants.

The out-dated reliance on peat as the mainstay of plant production is neither warranted nor in fact necessary for future business. We have experimented widely with several alternatives to peat compost and we have conducted extensive trials at our nursery at Moddershall.

Peat free and sustainable plants

Boultons began peat-free cultivation in 2005 after recognising that continued use of unsustainable natural resources could not continue without significant consequences further down the line. As a result, we began to develop our production systems with environmental issues in mind.

Finding peat alternatives that work

The out-dated reliance on peat as the mainstay of plant production is neither warranted nor in fact necessary for future business. However, when considering alternatives to peat, it is important that all aspects are examined and used to their best potential.

There are many different types of peat-free growing medium – some are good and some not so good, but ultimately, they are out there and available to use. Boultons has experimented widely with several alternatives to peat compost and we have conducted extensive trials at our nursery at Moddershall.

The trials proved difficult in the initial stages, as adapting our growing methods required some adjustments. Significant changes came in watering, as the peat-free alternatives displayed different characteristics. Sustainable materials of wood fibre, coir and bark have significant behavioural differences and consequences with irrigation frequency, moisture content and fertiliser release compared to peat.

Using peat-free alternatives has also helped with weed control, with the added bonus of using fewer chemicals, in particular with liverwort control.

We consider our nursery to be a leading grower of sustainable plants.

Organic

Beyond peat free is the notion of a fully organic production cycle, and Boultons is leading the way on this. A fully organic production cycle means local provenance, on-site propagation, no artificial fertilizer, no peat, no chemicals, no heat, no single-use plastics and plants cultivated by expert hands.
